Crows foot steering

Post by kajunoutlaw »

I have seen pictures of the crows foot steering and would like to go this route. The question I have is, what is inside the rudders to keep them from collapsing on themselves? Any information will be greatly appreciated.

I think what is being asked is is the crows foot attached only to the skin of the rudder or is there some structure inside the rudder it attaches to? I cant help with whats inside them structure wise.

Air foils are hollow, the stress is mainly fore and aft not upward.

I guess it wouldn't be any different with foam filled rudders then. I was just thinking that there might be some inside structure. The rudder skin is mighty thin, but if thats all there is, it is what it is. Seen it working for many a year just never knew anything about them, hence couldn't help any. :thumbleft:

The ones I have experience with, tabs with nuts welded to them are riveted inside before welding of the airfoil. Then thecrows foot can be bolted to it. No special structure. 3 mounting point spread the stress.

This is how alot of us do them down in the glades... Give yourself a few inches for the drop on the crows foot and it makes a nice stop so your rudders dont fold over themselves. Play with the placement of the crowfoot on the rudder it self moving it forward/backward so you can get maximum range of motion but also keeping the rudders from folding on themselves then bolt it down. After you find that then do your top brace..hope this helps

Thanks yobee and homesteadgator. This is exactly the information I was looking for. I like the simplicity of the set up.
