Easiest way to make 350 run dry

Post by Hogslayer0910 »

I'm getting a 13'6" boat with a 350 Dd on it, guy said it will run dry in certain stuff, but will not run the hill, what's my best choice to make it run the hill, it is a stock 350, do I add a gear box, or cam? Or both?

Gear box. Then you have to get a right hand rotation prop. Lots of $ and work. Changing and moving rigging. You might as well just get a different boat.
just my opinion though

Post a pic so we can advise on what needs to be changed. Different prop and gearbox and possibly a cam swap for starters though. Like the post above hints at - You might end up paying more for the changes than you did for the boat...

I don't have any pics right now, I'm getting the boat Sunday I can post some pics then, I'm not opposed to spending some money, but dnt want to spend a ton, the boat is in rough condition, it has been sitting outside for past few years but I am planning on fixing it up, dnt know if I should fix it up and sell it and buy another or just put a little more money in this one and have it done right

In that case, fix it up and see if it suits your needs. If it doesn't, sell it and start planning for what you will need to be satisfied 8)

If you put a belt drive on it you can use the same prop and it will run the dry a lot better. Get the highest ratio you can find. Have seen a stock 350 with a high ratio drive run the hill just fine on a bigger boat!

What about what prop would be best for it? What would give the most low end? The prop that is on it is a 72" florida air

Pics will be a huge help! What prop does it have right now? Had a guy come in with I big old glass boat, dd 350, and warp drive. Ran ok. Put a signature series on it and it runs all kinds of nasty stuff now. His motor looked to be a little hopped up as it was turning a bit more pitch than most 350s will but none the less very impressive!!! As for adding a reduction... If you go gear, as earlier stated, you'll need a rhr prop. If you go belt, you will STILL need a new prop. Dd props won't usually hold back a reducted motor and if you do get it to, it'll be far from the performance you want.

If the boat runs a little dry now with that wood prop I'd say try a carbon prop. Sesnich q series or whirlwind whisper tip

Id go with a water walker Sig prop and get away from that woody. It'll be the best bang for your buck without having to redo your rigging. Talk to David he will hook you up. Tell him Eric sent you.

10-4 thanks. Do u think it's worth time to "build" the motor? Or just put another prop on it?

Never ran one but I've heard many claim that a two blade will run the ground better (mine runs good with a two blade). And pitching a 2 blade would probably be less of a hassle then setting 5 warp blades IMO

And brad, your right, satisfaction only last for one day at the most and when night rolls around we all start thinking how to get more out of our rigs :toothy7:

You say its been sitting several years. Do you know for sure that the motor runs. Have you run the motor yourself. It must be a real inexpensive boat to buy after sitting for a couple years. Motor might be fine, might be filled with water. Be sure and know what you are buying. If motor runs, and seems to run good, talk with one of the prop sales people on here. They all have demo props to try out for a day, put a demo prop on it and run it and see if it makes a significant difference. Cheap/free way to find out, you could be happy without going for the full meal deal of new box/belt, prop, cam etc. Fix up the boat as inexpensively as you can, rattles cans instead of powder coat, etc. You won't have it long, but learn from it, and in a year or less, move on to your next boat. Use this as a inexpensive learning tool. Have fun. Bud

For me a 4 blade warp drive works really well. I had to do a lot of adjusting, it was a pain, but found the sweet spot. only complaint is its loud.

id definitely go with a 2 blade carbon fiber over the warp! You will be able to get a good push & the ease of pitch in the woods will make a world of difference when your adjusting it trying to find that sweet spot. :florida:
