Air filter ?

I have a Continental , recently acquired, which has a K&N filter, no housing. I don't know the age or whether it was ever washed. I have been told that airboats don't require a filter, just rain protection. I understand that some just use a screen. I have a Holley carburetor, 500 cfm. I would appreciate any suggestions.

Do you run dry a lot? I tend to use my boat more like a 4 wheeler than a boat. I run a k&n style on mine.
