Can a new modified 850 H.P. John Deere diesel tractor make mincemeat of 1800's steam tractor rated 18 H.P?
It's all about torque and traction... enjoy

Re: Tractor Pull, A torque Lesson
Love that video, Yeller ....... thanks!
As another example, a diesel locomotive will only pull (develop tractive effort) equivalent to around 24-26 % of what it weighs.
After that, wheel slip sets in. A 2,000 hp. locomotive and a 5,000 hp. locomotive will both pull the same tonnage if they weigh
the same ........ the 5,000 hp. unit will just accelerate the train faster and maintain a higher average speed over hilly territory.
Torque rules.

Re: Tractor Pull, A torque Lesson
Cool video but nothing to do with torque, it has to do with power transfer. The steam tractor probably out weights the john Deere by a factor of four. Therefore as was stated earlier was better able to deliver its power to the ground. I.e. a 5 horse Briggs set up in a winch configuration and bolted to a tank will pull anything, but almost certainly has less torque than what your driving.

Steam engines deliver maximum torque at 0 RPM. Now its only been 50 years since High School Physics class but I think that is what I remember if my Alzheimers isn't acting up. LOL

Re: Tractor Pull, A torque Lesson
Beautiful tractors, both. and thank the lord for torque in this thanksgiving season. Without torque, what would we be arguing engines with? Torque can be like money. A fellow's money can be a good part of his potential. That old steam tractor used its' torque & potential in the smartest way. The draw bar is set up hill to it so that it has a lifting effect on the eager youngster's rear tires and with less traction they just dig trenches. His huge wheels are pulled downward even increasing his already massive traction from shear weight.

Very astute observations, both.

It's all about the weight and gearing. You could make it peddle power and gear it right and it would win.
