Never again cut a ring of a swolen finger !

I know we all get our hands banged around so finger swelling it not all that uncommon. It can turn nasty of a ring prevents blood flow. The old thing was to cut the ring off, but some people have inherited wedding rings that are a treasure not to be parted with. Here is how its done and a slick addition to your First Aid Kit.

Good technique. Have used it in the past. It works well until the swelling and pain reach a certain point.
We had a family knock on our fire station door last Friday night with their young daughter with a coat zipper decorative ring stuck on her ring finger and it was badly swollen already. The family tried at home with soap, oil, etc. to no avail. It had been quite a while and was at the point where it restricted the circulation. We've used this technique with the O2 elastic band and we tried to apply it here. We found that as you wind the band up the finger the fluids causing the swelling must make their way past the constriction and back into the hand…this did not occur and caused the swollen area to swell further and caused much pain.
We resorted to the ring cutter and it worked well.
The higher the swelling, the more difficult it is to perform any removal maneuver. Crushed ice bag will numb the area and help with pain and swelling.
