If anybody wants to see Alaska, go NOW, while its still there. It's fading fast but there are still places worth seeing and being.

in '94 I drove from Melbourne, FL to Anchorage,AK. I took my '85 4x4 GMC 2500 with a factory new engine and a 28' travel trailer RV in tow. It was an amazing trip driving through the US. I took the Alaska Ferry out of Bellingham, WA up to Haines, AK, then drove out into Canada to Haines Junction and then on to enter back in AL at TOK. Then the drive down the Glenn Allen Highway and on in to Anchorage.

I was in no hurry and took many side trips putting on around 4,700 Miles. I joined KOA and made use of their campgrounds and forward reservations. Our Ferry trip was the last of the season and was Amazing! We drove from Tok and overnighted at Glenn Allen in snow and from Glenn Allen to Anchorage in the snow. Not for the careless or inattentive driver for certain but definitely for the adventurous. I checked into the Golden Nugget RV park in Anchorage for the winter just a few days before Halloween. I had left Melbourne in April.

I guess if I ever get back to AK I will never again let an excuse or reason to leave sway me. My intent was to winter in Anchorage then move on up to Fairbanks the next summer but family took sick in FL and I had to sell everything and catch a plane back to FL. I don't regret coming back to take care of family but now that most of my family is gone I sure would need a better excuse next time.

Alaska is the most solefull place I have ever been. It is so HUGE and so geologically NEW that it calls you to it. My brain stayed in sensory overload the whole winter.

There is simply no way that National Geographic photographers even can do it justice. It simply must be seen to be believed. If you take 100% of everything you have seen on TV and in the movies and read in books, it amounts to maybe 1% of what being there is like. It can and will steal your sole, and you will fall in love with it.

When you put it like that Whitebear it's hard to not want to make the same trip. I'd love to live there, but I don't think my Florida bones could handle the AK chill of winter. Some day I'll get up there for a months or 2 in the summer though.

Man! The Winter is the best time to be there. The roads are smooth and theres no insects pestering ya. You would be amazed how easily you deal with the winter temps once you learn how to prepare for it. Once below about -10 you don't notice any differences in a -20 day and a -40 and -40 day. The cold just like the heat here can be dangerous, but you learn about it in 10 minutes. Just like the heat, the cold can be unforgiving to the slow learners though and they find them froze to death in their cars along the highways every spring. You go in pre arranged convoys in the winter no outback trips alone. You keep food and fuel in your vehicle and extra clothing etc.. Much like airboating here. I won't go on, because most don't believe it until they live it. :)

I packed my truck and drove up here in March of 98, at 53 it was the first time I'd ever been here. I was single then, and not tied down and so I just moved. One of the biggest mistakes I made in my life was not coming up here in 1970 right after I graduated from collage, had a BS in Wildlife Biology. Would have changed my whole life.

I learned the first year that winter is great if you are prepared for it. I had a snow machine (snowmobile, not snow blower) and if it is above 0 it is easy to over heat and sweat. Zero is about perfect, -40 you can feel a bit chilled, but 0 is good, much above that and it gets too warm. Dress for the cold and you lov it. Place is getting over crowded now, lots of people with ATV's and airboats and most of all small airplanes, if you have cash, the whole state is easily accesable to most anybody. Bud

Any of you guys from the south come up here, give me a call or pm, happy to show you some of the sights and a few fish also.
:alaska: If you ain't living on the edge, you're taking up to much space.

I could go for some of those 200 Pound Flounder too! Of course they don't call them flounder though. Halibut is still a flat fish and still very mild just like flounder is.

Smoked Salmon is food of the gods !

You know I thought I was feeling a little God like tonight with our smoked sockeye and roasted coho Salmon. The baked potatos just sat there uneaten!

Yep, been there twice, first time for the month of June, (97), caught a 28 Lb salmon, vacuum packed, froze, dry ice, taped up cooler, he came home with me like a piece of luggage.
If you are in good health, decent job, comfortable home, it is heaven on earth.
If you can take advantage of all that is there to do, no other place like it.
My daughter and her husband lived in North Pole for six years until he was killed in a freak motorcycle accident In Palmer, (Harley state shindig), my second trip was to bring her home after that.
As said above, you have to have been there to know it.
