Re: Lycoming 320 power and prop

That is not necessarily a bad prop recommendation as it will spin up quick and run faster while still giving you ground push. That prop was made for all around performance on that engine and is probably their default recommendation, just like the F150 is the default at the Ford dealer, until you sh...

Re: WhirlWind Propellers to Answer Your Engineering Questions

Re: WhirlWind Propellers to Answer Your Engineering Questions

Please explain what the roll Is? Slidin Gator pretty much nailed it, but I'll give some info on where the roll comes from when it's not fresh out'a the oven. Torque Roll is the when torque of the engine is trying to rock your boat sideways. This happens in 2 ways: 1) when you punch the throttle and...

Re: WhirlWind Propellers to Answer Your Engineering Questions

Hi, sorry for the delayed response: Our largest propeller diameter is 84". The roll effect comes from the propeller having a higher pitch if it doesn't have enough blade area to produce thrust at its ideal pitch. This can be solved with wide blades (check out our SUPER WIDE Carbon Max blades: h...

Re: WhirlWind Propellers Airboat Design Process

Yes, the blade flex (deflection) is calculated in the analysis; but I'm not going to be the one holding a ruler up next to a spinning propeller! We can verify some simple cases like clamping the hub and bending the blade with a known force, but for real on-the-engine testing we use strain gauges to ...
