400 sbc timing
Hey guys, my friend has a large heavy fishing rig. It has a fresh 400 sbc direct drive set up. It has small valve aluminum heads 9.5 to 1 compression and a low rpm cam. The distributor is an Accel. When it’s hot it kicks back and cleans a few teeth off the starter on restart. I have some weights and...

Re: 400 Small Block build
We heard from the machine shop today. The heads are 1970 vintage 350 heads. They are drilled for the steam holes. One gasket was drilled. The one that blew wasn’t. They need valve seats and they are going to replace them with smaller ones. They plan on using 9.5to1 pistons and a comp cams recommende...

Re: 400 Small Block build
Thanks for the replies. Yes it’s a direct drive setup. The prop looks like ones from Ivoprop corp. It will probably get replaced the next time he gets $3000. He had just gotten the boat with a broken tach so we didn’t have a good rpm number before the blown head gasket. When we told the machinists w...

400 Small Block build
A friend of mine has a 17 x8 high sided aluminum hull on the heavy side. It has a 400 small block that was recently dropped off at the local machine shop after an over heating issue. It has a 72 inch 3 blade fixed pitch prop that looks like an IVO type. It would spin it 2400 rpm on the trailer with ...

Hey guys , I'm pretty sure it wasn't over heated . No direct sunlight anywhere near here that time of year. haha. I'm pretty sure what happened was we didn't have the whole sheet hot enough. We worked it in the best we could with a heat gun and a propane torch .Pulling the poly around the chines wit...

Re: hull tuning
I was really surprised the way it rode after the poly. It was completely different. Direct opposite. The bottom seemed flat upside down on the lift before I installed it. The glass is really thin in the rear third of the hull. 1/4 or less. That’s a big part of why I installed the poly. It’s pretty r...

Re: hull tuning
Your not going to like the answer but not much sticks to poly after the fact! Build it up flat before poly or suffer another bad poly job because the hull prep was not done before new poly? Kind of a no brainer with a water hose and good eye or a even a flash like at night. Your hull was rippled or...

Hey guys, I have a 4 cyl Lycoming on a 12 ft fiber glass hull. Before I added 5/16 poly to it it would hop badly in deep water at speed. It has a trim tab that would settle it right down. After I added the poly it rode hard on the nose as soon as I got on plane. After reading some post and looking in...

Hey guys , A friend of mine is looking at a boat tomorrow. Its a 400 cid. small block Chevy and a 3 blade prop. Other than general condition are there any other BIG flags we should be looking for on a DD small block . It looks like fun but I don't want him to buy a money pit . I don't want to let hi...

Re: Warp drive pitch
I would love to try a few different props. With my mufflers where they are now the most I can clear would be about 64 in. That would only 2 in. To close for my taste. I need to redo my exhaust then I’ll be able to move up. Thanks for the offer though Rick

I’m not very tech savvy. I think I have a few messages but I can’t find them on my phone. How do I do that? I have an iPhone 6s and I’m using the SA app. Thanks Rick

Re: Honda power
I did a mini build a few years ago with a old Yamaha sled motor. I wanted to keep the torque converter in play but it started to get more complicated and busted the price point I was shooting for. I finished it with a pulley direct drive and was sadly disappointed with the project. Obnoxiously loud ...

We ended up going to saw grass. My grandson loved the zoo. The next day we went to the Loxahatchee boat ramp. Tried some fishing with no success but it was fun. Saturday my brother in law and I went to the Freedom Ride. Lots of cool boats and good people. Thanks guys who helped push me off. We are g...

Re: Warp drive pitch
I pitched it 2 more deg. now at 18deg at tips. It brought my trailer rpm down to 2750 and cruise down to around 2000 in deep water and 1800 or so in skinny. Cruising at a GPSed 27 and top end around 38. Still stuck all three times I stopped yesterday at the Freedom Ride. A new prop is probably in my...

I have a 12 Ft Fiberglas boat with poly. It has a 320 conversion Lycoming. It has a 62 in 4 blade warp drive. I have it pitched to turn 2900 on the trailer. I’m looking to get the most push out of this setup. I hate getting stuck. Would adding mor pitch help? I’m under the impression the warps like ...

We started to go to Loughmans yesterday but they were closed for a repair of some kind. So we went to the jolly gator. Food was good and riding was good. Saw a few gators and an eagle. Good times. Tomorrow we are thinking about going to Mack’s fish camp. My boat only really holds 2 adults and a kid....

Hey guys. I’m heading south with my boat in tow. Escaping the snow for a little while and wanting to put some miles on the boat. Where in NE Pa. are you ? I'm in Hop Bottom. I thought I was the only nut with an airboat around here. Not many people up here to work on "airboat spec. " AC motors .Every one I talked to wanted crazy money for aircraft spec. work. I had to mail my stuff to Gary Barber at Outlaw Aircraft i...
