you want Torque . you mite also try experimental aircraft sites for corvair parts I know we used them before and there are lots of info and parts once you get to looking. for the airboat it depends on your set up I sold a homemade gear reduction a while back for a corvair to a guy in GA and we used to use the VW big bore kits on the corvairs .

what is the weight of a chevy 350 is it really tippy with that big motor sitting up in the air the boat i got is 16x78 flat bottom with runners. is it worth buildinga diffrent cage and just replacing the corvair motor? the corvair is so light though i don't know what would work better do you?

In my opinion 16'x78'' is too much hull for a small motor like the corvair. A a nice 350 would be much better. Still keep in mind your not going to be running dry ground with building the motor up a little bit and adding gear/belt reduction. You won't have to worry about tipping. JMO...... then again you bought the boat with the corvair so it had to do halfway okay with it, but I can't see it doing much more than puttin around on a big hull like that. To put it into prospective I'm building a 16'x8' boat right now with a 600hp sbc with a gear reduction, but I plan on going anywhere I want to with it

My Buddy back in Indy runs a Corvair on a 16 foot aluminum hull, He would run on ground if it was muddy, He told me he had 4 guys in the boat many time going up the river for hunting/fishing trips. He would swear by the little motor

The first time I was ever on the stick I was sliding around the edges of the sand bars like a pro, but the end of the 4 guy story he did run a log through the side of it because he said he came around a corner and she wouldnt turn and ran a log clean through the side above the water line, hahaha, It felt fast for me being it was my first time one one, so I couldnt judge a speed for you sorry, It was not real fast but we were getting up the river pretty good,

well i got the motor rebuilt. it has good compression. i tested it and not one cylinder lower than 125 psi. timing is right on and cam is set at 0 degrees but i can,t turn over 2000 rpm with the prop on. the prop is directly bolted to the crank. is that about what it should be turning for a motor this size? i have a wood 60" 2 blade prop. it trolls at a perfect speed for shooting carp though so i'm not changing anything if i don't have to. i just want some more rpms for top end.

Most manufacturers I know stamp it into the hub. Let me get a picture for ya what to look for. Should find something like this:

Sounds like a 60x32 to me then. Might be cool to take a look on the Sencenich site or any of the other prop MFRs and see what they say about a HP rating.

well i found some older post on here and there was a guy running 60x36 prop on a vw 65 hp motor and he was turning 3000 rpm. as for some other postes on corvair motors they are running a 66x32 with rpms at 2800 or so. so i would guess my rpm should be around 3000 at wot. but i would like a avitar but i can't shrink my pics.

so i put some bigger jets in the carb and it runs a lot smoother but still will not turn past 2000rpm i have turned the distributer advanced and retarded and not any change. what am i over looking here? do you run the vacume advance on your motor or is it off? i seen another set up on ebay and i don't see a vacume hose on his. well thanks for the help so far it is not exactly as i thought it would be for driving it but not bad.

Carp slayer, from experience with corvairs on airboats, the accelerater pumps on carbs working well is very important. The engine being horzontally opposed, will rev smoothly, but slowly with only one pump working, makes a big differnce in acceleration snap.

I use to run a 140Corvair you should get about 2800 RPM the prop with he wings could be what I had was a Banks and Maxwell they were the main ones that made props for Corvairs and VW's. Mine was on a 14' and would run pretty good... would not run dry but would go approx 25-30 mph. went over a lot of thick water lilies with it... did not have a problem with it but make sure you use the fan to keep it cool when it is idling... It is prone to overheating. Man that sure was a long time ago... The Distributor should have vaccume advance make sure it is hooked up to VENTURI VACUUM and not PORTED! If it is hooked to ported that is your problem!!! I hope that helps...
