Wash it well. I prefer to cut it off at the shank. Then run the rest of the hook threw the shin. Make sure your Tetanus is up to date.

I have pushed them through an cut them off before but its a whole lot less painful to run a 8 gauge needle up the shank and slip the barb inside the barrel of the needle then pull it out

A local Bass f isherman / buddy of mine wrapped a piece of string around the bend in the hook;held the eye against the skin (to deflect the barb away from the flesh ) and popped it out all at once with a quick snatch of the string. It left a small red dot about like a wasp sting would look like. .... healed up nice!
